Redmoon Theater hosted a night of fantasy for more than 750 guests at its annual fundraiser, Spectacle Lunatique, held March 15 in its cavernous warehouse space in Pilsen.

Partygoers experienced interactive installations, culinary delights from top restaurants, pyrotechnic displays and aerial artists. Howard Tullman, CEO of tech startup center 1871, was honored with the Galvanizer Award.

Guests took turns on a giant swing set and enjoyed barbecue tastings supplied by the "Cyclone Grill," a merry-go-round-type apparatus with Weber grills. Aerial artists from Redmoon and Aerial Dance Chicago performed, while actors dressed as bears played pool with guests for a $50 donation. Special keys provided entry into the VIP Luna Lodge, where attendees were treated to a private bar, desserts from French Pastry School, massages and faux tattoos.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his wife, Amy Rule, participated in a "Ten-Minute Table for Two" with tastings from Schwa restaurant's executive chef Michael Carlson while a classical opera singer serenaded them for a $250 donation.

Redmoon's executive and producing artistic directors, Jim Lasko and Frank Maugeri, greeted the crowd via video. The short film introduced the company's vision for the future, which includes the Great Chicago Fire Festival, a citywide event that will launch this summer.

After the video, Tullman was honored with the Galvanizer Award in a dramatic ceremony that began with a 38-drummer percussion procession. Spotlights followed the honoree, who arrived in a rickshaw.

Co-chaired by Lucy and Matt Moog, the event raised nearly $400,000 to fund free summer programming in the parks, primarily in underserved areas.

Redmoon's Spectacle Lunatique: A Magical Night Honoring Howard Tullman (Video)

Redmoon's Spectacle Lunatique: A Magical Night Honoring Howard Tullman (Video)

One of Chicago’s most anticipated galas, Redmoon Theater's annualSpectacle Lunatique will be held on Saturday, March 15.  This decadent night of inspired performances and culinary delights will be held in the industrial elegance of Redmoon’s 57,000-square foot warehouse studio in Pilsen.  Over 1,000 of Chicago’s civic, cultural and business leaders gather for Spectacle Lunatique each year raising funds for Redmoon’s free public work that happens throughout the city, primarily in areas that are culturally underserved.
Howard Tullman, President and CEO of Flashpoint Academy, Chairman and CEO of Experiencia, Inc. and newly named CEO of Chicago tech hub 1871, will be honored as the 2014 Galvanizer Award recipient.  Each year, Redmoon presents this award to an individual who galvanizes communities for a more vibrant Chicago.
This year, Lunatique’s theme of “Redmoon: At the Scale of the City” will inspire the evening’s offerings as performances throughout the space give guests an exclusive preview of the Spring Spectacle and the designs and planning of the inaugural Great Chicago Fire Festival, due to take place in October.  This year, over a dozen of Chicago’s top chefs will be represented in “tasting experiences” throughout the evening, all presented in Redmoon’s signature style combining imagination, whimsy and the unexpected.  Music and an open bar complete the experience.
Tickets:  VIP: $625, General: $450, Late Night: $100.  Tickets are available by calling the Redmoon Box Office at 312-850-8440 x123 or online atwww.redmoon.org.

TRIBECA FLASHPOINT ACADEMY CEO HOWARD TULLMAN QUOTED IN CANDID CANDACE

Yahoo's Marissa Mayer bans (some) employees from working at home, ridiculous or not?

Yahoo's Marissa Mayer bans (some) employees from working at home, ridiculous or not?
In July 2012, Marissa Mayer was lured away from Google to re-energize Yahoo.  Shortly after being hired, she said, "I want Yahoo to be the absolute best place to work, to have a fantastic culture.  We're working really hard right now to remind people about all of the opportunities that are there."
That was then, when working from home was a perk for many employees,  and this is now.  Mayer has notified an unspecified number of Yahoo staff that they will need to report for work to local offices.  Gasp!  And even though there is a preponderance of articles about the wisdom of this decision,  I can see lots of reasons why, for certain positions, this is the best course of action.
In a recent Daily Mail article, genius businessman Richard Branson said, "This seems a backwards step in an age when remote working is easier and more effective than ever."  And our own local genius/Tribeca Flashpoint Academy founder, Howard Tullman, said,  "I think that we are heading more and more toward what we call the 'porous'  workplace which means that people will be coming together and working together virtually regardless of where they are located. You won’t even know whether the person is next door or in the Netherlands in a pretty short time. She’s trying to turn back the tide and it’s not going to be good for her or anyone else there."
We've all been on conference calls with children crying, doors slamming, dogs barking, doorbells ringing and even toilets flushing so, in some ways, going into the office seems like the better choice.   But some jobs are done better if people can interact in person.  Creative ideas need a group atmosphere so you can bounce them off of each other, read body language and see how fully committed someone is to a certain course of action.  I think eye-to-eye contact is critical in a creative environment but, on the other hand,  I would guess that technical jobs wouldn't need such a personal touch and it wouldn't matter if these employees worked from home or not.
And, of course,  it's easier to work from home.  Some statistics show that people who do are more productive, happier, stay with the company longer and work harder.  But I know this isn't always the case.  There are distractions at home that sometimes keep you from concentrating.   There's that new magazine that beckons or it's a sunny day and you're a golfer.   I could go on and on.   BUT, who's to say that office workers don't waste time, too?  Name one person you know who works in an office and doesn't waste one moment of his day on something personal.   (Why is Facebook so active in the afternoons? I wonder......) So, I don't think it's a matter of the work space dictating the quality of the job being done but, rather the worker himself.
So if this latest move by Mayer tends to separate the "wheat from the chaff,"  then just maybe she's onto something.....I sure would miss my fuzzy slippers, though.....

I am sooooo excited about Victory Gardens Theater’s 2011 “Chicago Stories” fundraiser on Friday, May 13th, at the Four Seasons Hotel!

I am proud to be a co-chair along with Anne Marie Peretz and Stephanie Pendexter for Artistic Director Dennis Zacek’s farewell gala. The night’s events will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live and silent auctions, a divine dinner in the elegant Grand Ballroom and plays written by two VERY notable Chicagoans: philanthropist Pam Crutchfield and Howard Tullman, president/CEO of Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy.

The evening will close with a special tribute play to Dennis Zacek written by the VGT Playwrights Ensemble. There are also some surprises I can’t mention in case Dennis reads this!
