Tacit Group

“The ultimate improvisation in music and media expression.”
–Understanding Hangul
These maverick Korean media artists create a high-tech audio-visual performance using sources such as video games, real-time personal computer interactions, and dialogue for the ultimate interactive concert. A new breed of composers with a deep sense of play, this motley team bends mathematical code to make music that is projected on a large screen. With laptops as instruments, Tacit Group uses real-time projection mapping and computer graphics to create a unique performance that draws the audience into compelling soundscapes and stunning visual environments.

The group is composed of South Korean artists Jin Won Lee (aka Gazaebal “Lobster Foot”), one of the founding members of Tacit Group as well as the first Korean to rank at the top of the British Techno charts; Jaeho Chang, composer, media artist and co-founder of Tacit Group, whose passion is developing algorithms based on computer programming and then composing music with them; Eunhee CHO, a Seoul born and based composer and sound artist; Taebok CHO (aka GRAYCODE) an Electro-Acoustic Music Composer and artist who recently released an album; Kwangrae KIM, an award-winning composer, new media director and multi-disciplinary producer; Hyemin SEO, the youngest member of Tacit Group, is working on a master’s degree in computer music composition; JehoYun is a composer and sound artist who has been working across different fields such as interactive sound, audio-visual and mapping projection.

About the artists

Tacit Group is an audiovisual performance group founded in 2008 with the vision of creating new sound and performance art by incorporating dynamic disciplines like electro acoustic music, algorithmic composition, and visual art. A strong digital tech foundation allows the group to explore various genres of performance—from the audiovisual to interactive installation and even educational forums and courses. The group’s approach to music using games and algorithms became an instant success in Korea and in 2011 they came to the attention of international presenters. They have performed at major art scenes in Korea, including Nam June Paik Art Center, Art Center Nabi, and PAMS Choice. Tacit’s MCA engagement is part of the group’s first US tour after a sensational debut in Denmark for the Aarhus Festival (2011) aptly themed “Beautiful Mistakes.”
