Yesterday, with dripping contempt for the country’s “liberal” legal experts, James Freeman of the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board presumptuously purported to ask on behalf of all Americans, “What Would We Do Without Experts?” like the “leftist pundits” who “botched another legal analysis” in the matter of Wisconsin state court Judge Dugan. In posing his question with the smugness of the non-lawyer that he is, he thought he made examples of some of the country’s most knowledgeable legal experts, unwittingly making an example of himself instead.
As if the non-lawyer James Freeman would know whether a legal analysis were botched. (He couldn’t be troubled to provide his own legal analysis and subject it to critique by the actual legal analysts he attacked.)
Mr. Freeman went on confidently and impliedly to answer his own purported rhetorical question on behalf of all Americans, of course never intending for we Americans to answer his presumptuous question for ourselves as he purported to want.
His unsurprisingly self-assured answer: America would not be in the imperiled place it finds itself today, because President Trump would not be encumbered by the Constitution and Laws of the United States, those pesky little things that the rest of us revere and abide by.
In his supercilious drive-by libel of the handful of “leftist pundits” he called out by name — incidentally, including me — he did not bother to ask we leftist pundits how we would answer his question. After all, we are Americans, too. Or at least I think we are.
Well, Mr. Freeman, we would have answered it in the same way that I venture to say millions upon millions upon millions upon millions of Americans would answer it. That is, millions upon millions upon millions upon millions of Americans more than you.
This is how we would have answered your question had you cared or bothered to ask:
If we Americans didn’t have any legal experts and instead only amateur, non-lawyer Trump “legal” pundits like yourself, we Americans would have a President of the United States, unchecked under the Constitution of the United States by either the Congress or the Supreme Court or anyone else for that matter. Except, that is, for whatever “checks” were provided by the pompous, non-lawyer Trump “legal” pundits like yourself.
That’s what we Americans would have. How do we know that?
Because that’s what we do have, thanks to “conservative” media pundits untrained in the law, like yourself, parading themselves as actual experts in the Constitution and Laws of the United States when they are not.
Yes, Mr. Freeman, I agree with you, with one small caveat. A charming media practice of our age is indeed the presentation of Trump lawyers and non-lawyers such as yourself as sage arbiters of controversial cases related to administration policy.
