Another Review of the Mobile Art Show

The sky was grey, the wind chilling but what was found inside was enough to color the most dismal of early winter days and warm the soul.

As has become customary since the arrival of director Tommy McPherson, the Mobile Museum of Art in Langan Park is presently treating the local populace to first-rate exhibits that are raising the bar for this sleepy Southern town. McPherson appears to be the perfect complement to a revamped museum eager to match its modern environs with shows as dynamic.

The current slate of exhibitions is proof enough.

Ed McGowin’s elaborate and stimulating "Name Change Project" is both amusing and entrancing with a depth of thought that certainly induces reflection. In the course of the project, the artist changed his name a series of times, accompanying each different moniker with a completely manufactured biography and new style. The body of work underlines the multi-faceted aspect of not only artists but also the average human heart in a truly gifted concept.

The Dusti BongĂ© exhibition on loan from Biloxi underscores the work of oft-overlooked artists from a region which, at times, seems content to ignore the more adventurous in favor of watercolor boats and wildlife. Though the Mississippi-born artist’s surrealism is clearly part and parcel of her Twentieth Century roots, it belies a sensibility still refreshing without being too dated, especially in a land of over-mythologized moonlight and magnolias.

The Southeastern Juried Exhibition is also tantalizing, but the meat of the present shows is undoubtedly the Howard A. and Judith Tullman Collection entitled "Creative Imaginings." A list of superlatives spring to mind when contemplating the collection, but none do justice to the actual emotional gamut viewing elicits.

In fact, the first left hand turn into the gallery met one work so forceful, the first glance greeted a wave of intensity that passed through the observer’s core and stirred an almost visceral reaction. Superficially, Mary Borgman’s "Portrait of Jody Carter" (2002) seems another monochromatic likeness, however something seemed poised to leap from its subject’s gaze. Neither the technique nor the subject matter is uncommon, but whether it was the sheer size of the piece or the viewer’s receptiveness, its impact was tangible.

And that was only the first taste.

Work after work in this panoply of contemporary art was as vibrant as anything Artifice has seen in Mobile in years. Whether it was the haunting visage within Peter Drake’s "Out of Place" (2004), the schizoid religiosity of Norbert Cox’s works or the palpable explosiveness of Leonard Koscianski’s "Clash" (1988), every turn elicited inner action and reaction.

And is the case with contemporary art, much of it met subjects and emotions that are often avoided in our area for the uncomfortable ground they tread. Caleb Weintraub’s "Party Favors" (2005) in particular carried an overt violence that, while effective, would likely have been turned away from the museum in years past.

And Mobile’s seemingly most taboo of subjects was present in full force. The nudity that was the subject of a somewhat controversial installment of Artifice in the last year was everywhere. A full frontal female nude standing in longing over a prostrate and bare man, a distinctly unnerving male nude reclining amongst archetypes of the mythological South, or the open embrace of a naked couple protected by a distracted Rottweiler, there were more than enough human forms to shock the more puritanical quarters of our town.

But a glance through the comments in the guest book showed a refreshingly mature reaction to the exhibit. The skies didn’t fall, the earth didn’t open to swallow anyone. People took it for what it’s worth and evaluated it as such, as one would hope functioning human beings could do.

How this stands in stark comparison to other local venues that bill themselves as havens for contemporary work is inescapable, especially in light of the way the struggles of those venues’ artist advisory boards are sometimes negated, the political maneuverings within those institutions and the eradication of those who dare to try and hold their ideals above the inane and pedestrian backroom schemes.
Ideals? In an arthouse? Why who ever heard of such a thing?

Kudos to McPherson and company for retrieving the fallen standard and leading Mobile’s artistic charge into a new realm.

Maybe they can dash eastward down The Hill soon.

A Brief Note on New Financing for Experiencia

Week in Midwest Business: Origin of Howard Tullman's Experiencia

CHICAGO -- This week in Midwest business, we take a peak at Howard Tullman's latest venture that recently received $2.575 million in VC financing.

Are You Experienciad?

Serial entrepreneur Howard Tullman very well may have founded or directed more companies than the Chicago Bears currently have wins.

The guy who brought us companies including insurance automation specialist CCC Information Systems, music site Tunes.com and digital strategy shop Xceed Group has jumped back on the entrepreneurial horse after a stint turning around Chicago-based culinary school Kendall College.

Tullman is the chairman of for-profit educational company Experiencia. Founded in 2001 and located near the intersection of Chicago Avenue and the Chicago River (old stomping grounds for divine InterVentures and Sears), Experiencia recently closed on a $2.575 round of institutional financing led by Origin Ventures.

Founded by former Quill director of business development Steve Miller in 1999, Origin invests in Midwest-based seed and early stage technology companies. The firm has also backed insurance automation company Claimforce and iNest. iNest is a new-home builder referral network that was sold to Lending Tree in 2004.

Experiencia also raised money from private investors. The firm partners with grammar schools to offer "immersive leaning" programs for students grades three through six. To date, more than 1 million students have experienced the service. Investment proceeds will be allocated toward national expansion.

Fine Arts
Review: 'Creative Imaginings: The Howard A. and Judith Tullman Collection'
Heather Duffy

November 20, 2006

The Mobile Museum of Art is currently displaying "Creative Imaginings: The Howard A. and Judith Tullman Collection," an exhibition comprised from the Chicago couple's private collection.

The show is made up of representational paintings and drawings, primarily in the mediums of oil, acryic and charcoal. Largely figurative, this exhibition is one of the best examples of contemporary realism to arrive in Mobile in recent years.
Upon entering the gallery, one first notices the vast diversity of narrative subject matter and the large scale of most of the images. Massive canvases line the walls, interspersed with the occasional four-foot-tall drawing.

Aspects of Baroque and Renaissance painting can even be seen, of course, with contemporary twists. Bruno Sardo's "So What Do You Think?" takes an amalgamation of modern day characters (the businessman, the construction worker, etc.) and positions them into a composition reminiscent of Caravaggio's "The Taking of Christ."

Brooklyn-based artist, Sarah Bereza, even shows us a modernized look at a triptych altar piece. The three-paneled painting is adorned with an intricately carved border and wooden pinnacles that point towards the gallery ceiling. Each panel subsequently gives us the view of looking in from the other side of the mirror. Bereza shows the prominance that vanity is given in our time by holding it in the same esteem as that of religion in the Middle Ages. In each panel we see a different young girl, putting on lipstick, pushing her breasts together, putting on eye shadow; each staring into the mirror as devoutly as a monk would observe mass.

While many of the paintings are well-executed, Jennifer Presant's oil painting "Projection, Memory, Desire" surpasses the other works in beauty and technical skill. A nude woman stands in the center of a room, walking forward amidst a floor of scattered magazines. The background converges into a corner behind her as the walls come together. These walls, however, show a different image projected on either one. To the left we see a bedroom in complete disarray. The perspective is skewed; cluttered pillows and sheets fall from the bed, fading together into darkness. To the right, the same woman stands naked, looking away from a man lying on the bed, his forearm almost covering his face. One is immediately overwhelmed with a feeling of loss. These projections are images of a shattered past relationship. The woman in the center is utterly alone with only these fragments of memories. The projections create such a great depth of space that the confines of this small room are stretched out infinitely far.Her subtle caucasian skin tones glow in contrast to the rest of the painting. Painted over an acidic green underpainting, her flesh reads as luminous and soft. The brushstrokes on her body are non-existent. The underpainting shows through in many places, creating a sense of process, and a look at the foundation on which this painting was built. Burnt sienna and Indian red hues play well against the bright green. The background is brushy and soft, with many of the large shapes fading in and out of each other. Value contrast decreases and darkens everything but the central figure, pulling her forward and setting her apart from the loss and sorrow of these projected memories.

This show, of course, is not without its shortcomings. Some of the paintings lack any sort of complexity, and many read as if they are so photo-realistic that they may as well not even be paintings. Some even come off as the tasteless purchasing of an eccentric collector.

Despite these facts, the good aspects of this exhibition completely out-number the bad. This is a fine collection of what is currently happening with figurative realism. Ranging from the elegant and the lovely to the garish and offensive, this show is definitely worth seeing.

Artist Information:

Anna Sea was born in Chicago, grew up in Connecticut, and lived in Austria and Boston before moving in 1992 to Brooklyn, New York, where she currently lives with her husband, Craig, and their young son, Cain. She considers each of her paintings a chapter in a non-linear autobiographical narrative. Anna describes the journey of self-discovery as the most relevant pursuit of her art. Her visual vocabulary reflects an interest in half digested holy reliquaries (particularly Catholic), the clash of innocence and darkness, animals and plants as metaphors, and modern icons such as rubber ducks and guns.

"So, What Do You Think?"

Artist's Statement:

The characters in these scenes live in separate worlds of self-involvement. They walk through congested city streets in isolation from one another. Some characters loudly promote themselves and call out for attention, while others absorb themselves in private worlds. Some impose restraint on those around them, while others struggle for liberation. Traditional mythologies inspire contemporary metaphors and paint is applied using both modern and time-honored methods. Like the individuals in these paintings, we develop splintered identities, public and private selves. The work attempts to draw attention to the progressions and regressions of our crowded modern lives.

Artist Information:

Bruno A. Surdo was born in Chicago, Illinois. Early in his life, he showed great interest in art and the work of Renaissance masters. At the age of fifteen, Bruno moved with his family to Bari, Italy, where he began his formal art training. At the Liceo Artistico di Bari, Bruno studied drawing and art history and decided to pursue art as his career. Bruno continued his education in the United States and has continued to incorporate the techniques of the great masters in all off his work. He is regularly commissioned for portraits, landscapes, still lifes and figurative and allegorical compositions.

Mary Borgman

http://www.annnathangallery.com/pages/mary_borgman.htm

"Portrait - Jody Carter"

Artist's Info:

Mary Borgman creates larger than life portraits of culturally diverse subjects. Skillfully drawn, there is no escaping the emotions conveyed through the posture and attitudes of the handful being exhibited. Some proud, pretentious. Some sad, desolate. Others bold, angry, querulous. Persuasive portraits, they run the gamut of human emotion sans the mask of smiles.

Mary smears, smudges, rubs the charcoal -- dark here, lighter there. A wondrous nose, heavy eyes, a tilt to the head that screams "attitude", -- shadows in patches to make it all work. Charcoal is the medium and Borgman its master. She achieves in each portrait a radiance no doubt helped by the Mylar -- her canvas.

"People are the reason for my art, my only motivating source," says Borgman whose aggressive handling of charcoal carries over to her selection of subjects. "I saw my first model for the portraits jogging in the park, his long wheat-colored dreadlocks streaming out behind him. I jumped out of my car and chased him.. I then invited him to the studio in my home. Years later, he's still part of my life -- and my art."

Newspaper Review of the Mobile Art Show

Artwork, imagery provocative in Tullman show
Sunday, December 10, 2006

Compelling. Disturbing. Disconcerting. In your face.

"Contemporary Imaginings: The Howard A. and Judith Tullman Collection" is not for all tastes. I say that up front because this show is not for the timorous or the easily offended. The 47 paintings and 14 drawings on view at the Mobile Museum of Art in Langan Park, many of them quite large, are drawn from the Tullmans' Chicago-based collection and speak volumes about the revivified interest in image and narrative by American artists.

In his collector's statement, Howard Tullman alludes to a sign outside the couple's loft that reads in part: "We collect art that seizes your attention and imagination. Art that you cannot look away from or beyond. Art that contains a demonstrable strength and power. Art which effectively tells a story and ... always has more to reveal."

Tullman correctly notes that one cannot presume to reduce three decades of collecting and almost a thousand artworks into "a series of pithy statements in a sign on the wall. Ultimately, ... the art in the Collection speaks for itself."
And so it does, sometimes emphatically, and with a candor and passion than many gallery visitors will find discomfiting.

"Try to escape looking at Uma Thurman in Terry Rodgers' 'The Vortex' or to avoid the penetrating stare of the little nymph in Nola Romano's 'The Competition: Part Two: To The Finish' and you begin to understand the power of the pieces," Tullman writes.

The collectors' fondness for images that convey what the text describes as a "shared sense of asocial isolation" is jarringly evident in Caleb Weintraub's horrific "Party Favors," with its demon children amid human carnage; and in Chris Scarborough's unsettling portrait of a victim, titled "The Devil Was Great, I Swallowed Burning Cigarettes and Ate Ashes."

Whatever one thinks of the subject matter -- and I doubt whether more genteel visitors linger at these canvases -- the artwork is often sublime, imaginatively conceived and executed, and often rich with color. In many instances, "hot" colors (yellow, red, orange) contrast sharply with the darker subtext of the painting.
Consider Paul Sierra's nightmarish "Untitled" (1993), which depicts a silhouetted figure running along a wooded road or path, as though pursued by unseen forces in a fever-dream.

Study the ironic composition of John Alexander's provocative "Snake Oil Salesman" (1987-88), which strongly suggests the unwholesome link between sin and piety, and perhaps the hypocrisy of the "religion bidness."

Try not to flinch at the imminent savagery in Leonard Koscianski's "Clash" (1988), which might be a visual metaphor for war, good and evil, or the duality of humankind.

In his foreword to the "Creative Imaginings" catalog, chief curator Paul W. Richelson, Ph.D., writes: "Transformed from the expectable, image and narrative have returned to being viable strategies for contemporary artists."

He and Donan Klooz, curator of exhibitions, selected works of "provocative creativity," says Richelson, who says the new wrinkle in this show is "the artist's willingness to eclectically mine the past and its visual language; although there may be a discernible echo of Old Master lighting, folk art, cartoons, illustration or Surrealist fantasy, the result is truly visually arresting and unique."

This "twisted classicism" is the reason visitors might choose to spend a few moments with Bruno Surdo's droll "So What Do You Think?" which does suggest the work of a Flemish master. (The artist stands naked at the far left, wearing a red cap and dark glasses, while other characters in the painting reflect varying levels of interest in the central figure, a shirtless young man wearing headphones.)

Try to discern the levels of meaning in "Hyacinth Arsonist" (1999) by Thomas Woodruff, with its statuesque blond nude (with eyepatch) starting a fire with a magnifying glass.

To see how the collectors' taste and interests have progressed, Tullman urges a comparison with the early drawing of "Older Woman" by Bill Vuksanovich with the "Jody Carter" portrait by Mary Borgman; or Vuksanovich's tragic "Business Clown" with Wes Magyar's "Study of Lucas."

Nudity is prevalent in the Tullman show, from Alan Loehle's "Embrace" (1989), featuring a man and a woman, a Rottweiler and a graffiti-streaked wall, to Jennifer Presant's seductive " Projection Memory Desire" (2002), a bedroom dreamscape. Whether standing full frontal, reclining or at an oblique angle, the nudes here are by turns vulnerable, querulous and defiant.

Sometimes they are merely us, like the pregnant woman with her stuffed bear in Tamie Beldue's "Veracity" (2005), alone with our dreams, isolated in a gray world between who we are and who we wish to be.

"Contemporary Imaginings" will remain on view through Jan. 7. View the Tullmans' loft at www.tullman.com or at http://tours3.vht.com/vt/STD/ virtualtour.aspx?ListingID=10 29445 .

"Love Will Tear Us Apart"

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

My paintings depict young people at parties, bars, and private, intimate settings. I begin by taking digital photographs that are edited in Photoshop and printed. The subsequent physical act of pushing paint around canvas, romantic and intoxicating, allows me to act as an interpreter; I become an imperfect conduit through which color and form deviate subtly from their source. My paintings are close interpretations of photographs; a realistic plasticity of surface, mediated by my hand, is necessary to achieve the over-reality I want.

Like reality T.V. shows, the scenes I paint are so removed from and yet so close to reality that the experience becomes one wholly it's own. The bodies of young men and women sprawl across my large canvases, always on the verge of action or speech. Fields of color, pattern, and objects demand as much attention as the figures do. I want an overload of irrelevant information, not a clear delineation of my intent.

There are no faces; the anonymity of the characters is crucial to the artificiality I seek. In order for human drama to lose some touch with experiential reality, the specific identities of the characters involved are the first things to be jettisoned. The multiple panels function like comic book pages or channel surfing: different scenes relate to/ interact with each other creating a broken narrative and setting up nonsensical visual analogies. Hawaiian Lay is to Floral Print Blouse as Beer Bottle in Hand is to Hand Moving Closely to Crotch. The ability to construct clear narratives is hindered by my deletion of key facts most notably faces and by the visual noise caused by a glut of color, objects, and body parts.

Every step in the translation of an image alters it's content and, subsequently, our reception of the event. Every filter the image must pass through (including myself) becomes both barrier and mediator between the viewer and reality. An inverse relationship is created: the closer my paintings approach optical (or photographic) realism the further they get from experiential realism. This relationship creates contradiction on the canvas and for the viewer. How can a painting so culturally engaged and tactilely convincing feel so artificial? Because paint evidences my hand and my presence, the viewer must deal directly with me as mediator, regardless of how tactile the paint surface may seem. When my narratives enter this context human drama and experience become simultaneously more and less real. I believe contradictory statements are the most clear and purposeful a painting can make. Painting has the capacity to relate experience in an impossibly unique way it is for this reason I choose paint as the vehicle
for my stories.

Work in the Collection also includes a major piece by TERRY RODGERS.

"The Vortex"

Rodgers is concerned with our physical relationship to art. He creates a surreal uncertain world with everything in suspension. Figures are caught in mid–motion. There is a confluence of reality which is an aspect of the American dream. “The intrusion of reality is a discomfort that many of us carry with us,” says Rodgers. The paintings make us consider how many “worlds” we and the figures are caught “between”.

Rodgers is interested in the luminous details of the gestures that show the tension of communication. “Its all a matter of how light hits every surface, illuminating the moment of uncertainty,” he says. Rodgers invents interior design with their contrasting brocades, sheer metal surfaces, the clothes, the jewelry all points up the artifice of our lives. Artifice seems to mirror the people’s vitality and their sense of personal engagement.

Rodgers draws attention to the ways people listen or don’t listen to each other. “Each figure is delicately poised in relation to the others. You can sense their groping towards a solution.” This is stop-action painting where we focus on the intimacy and decisions of the moment. It is a private experience in a public place.. The paintings are existential vignettes within a veneer of refinement and restraint.

Rodgers work is part of the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., U.S. House of Representatives Office Bldg, Washington, D.C.,.,Supreme Court of the State of Ohio, Science and Technology Committee Room, U.S. House of Representatives Office Bldg, Washington, D.C., Fannie Mae, Federal National Mortgage Association, Washington, D.C., Kennedy Institute of Bio-Ethics, Washington, D.C., among others.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

My paintings are large, complex designs that attempt to reflect my sense of the times we are living in, and both how richly interesting they are and how difficult it is for most of us to navigate their uncharted waters. There is a great push and pull, the lure and the repulsion, the fiction and the real, the known and the unknown. And we live in this swirl of delicate gestures, driving desires, fantasy, economic complexity and interdependence, isolation and hope. I am trying to render some notion of this rich fabric.

Infinite fascination with details and dynamic pictorial architecture in combination with frustrated and sublimated desires make for a curious, static combustion in a painting. I attempt to map out these forces in western culture with a sense of their infinitely regenerative power.

And it's about the viewer—how we interpret and react to what we see, how we are the people in the paintings—and how they are us.

The paintings are not meant to judge or criticize. I am looking closely at who we are, the density of influences upon us, the mistakes we make, and the recognitions that occur in trying to navigate a universe with no sign posts. The figures in my paintings often are seen at a moment where some recognition or self-reflection seems to be taking place. These moments of recognition are metaphors for grappling with the unknown. Perhaps something is missing from their lives and they don't necessarily know what it is. They are metaphors for the search. My reaction to the figures and their gestures is sympathy, not judgment.

My hope is that ultimately these paintings show fragile, genuine human beings trying to make something of what they are confronted with. Each of them is unique in their individuality—in their hair, their eyes, their lips, their hands—and they are all separately struggling and often finding merely surface solutions and ephemeral escapes to the timeless riddles of consciousness.

NEW BOOK ABOUT TERRY'S WORK

"Love Will Tear Us Apart"

In the past few years, TERRY RODGERS has emerged as one of America’s most talented figurative painters. Thanks to a brilliant technique combining effortless brushstrokes and elaborate compositions, his paintings compel the viewer to participate in a disenchanted world where beauty, sex and money do not seem to bring happiness. In Rodgers’ world of appearances, the real wealth lies in the art of painting.

The Apotheosis of Pleasure, published by TORCH Books of Amsterdam, is the first comprehensive full-color catalogue to feature the work of this artist who will surely be recognized as on of the most important painters of the early 21st century. More than 60 works — selected in conjunction with the artist — present the full scope of Rodgers’ latest endeavour at portraying contemporary body politics. His rendering of the upper-class leisure life stands as an iconic vision of today’s society.

A short erotic tale, The Absent, by internationally best-selling French writer ALINA REYES (The Politics of love, The Butcher), invites the viewer to share a passionate and feminine experience of Rodgers’ work while also becoming the inspiration for performing our own story-telling based on Rodgers’ paintings.

In The Apotheosis of Pleasure, young and upcoming Belgian art critic CATHERINE SOMZÉ sets Rodgers’ work against the backdrop of cultural theories and establishes a possible archaeology of its iconography.

The catalogue is also available in a very limited special edition. Five specially designed boxes each include the book, a multiple signed by the artist and a special piece of lingerie by famous Dutch designer MARLIES DEKKERS.

The Apotheosis of Pleasure is a 112 page hardcover color catalogue of TERRY RODGERS’ paintings published by TORCH Books, Amsterdam (early December, 2006). The renowned Dutch design studio SMEL (http://www.smel.net) is responsible for the art direction and design of the book as well as the limited edition boxes.

The exhibition The Apotheosis of Pleasure is scheduled from 2 December 2006 until 13 January 2007 at TORCH Gallery. Address: Lauriergracht 94, 1016 RN Amsterdam,
phone: 0031(0)20-6260284.
