City officials recently celebrated the expansion of 1871 and the addition of more than 700 new jobs to the city's growing tech sector.

Chicago—Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced earlier this week that 16 local tech companies have added more than 700 new jobs in the city recently, an announcement that coincides with the expansion of1871, the city’s first digital startup hub.
“Today both 1871 and Chicago’s tech scene are growing so I want to thank these companies for committing to adding jobs and supporting the incubator where some of them started out,” Mayor Emanuel said in a statement. “These tech companies are establishing the next generation of Chicago’s economy–an economy that is thriving due to the city’s central location, access to transportation, unmatched talent and business-friendly environment.”
Tech companies expanding their Windy City presence include: blitsy, BuiltWorlds, Civis Analytics, Closerlook Inc., DevBridge Group, DialogTech, HighGround, ITsavvy, kCura, Luxury Garage Sale, Mattersight, Reverb, ReviewTrackers, SpotHero, Trustwave and Yello. In total, these company are adding 775 new tech jobs to the city.
“Chicago is fortunate to have such an engaged tech community, that works together to advance the city and its businesses,” said Jeff Malehorn, president & CEO of World Business Chicago. “Our efforts to attract talent, increase access to capital and facilitate connections to cultivate growth would not be possible without this supportive and nurturing community.”
Located within the Merchandise Mart at 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza #1212, 1871 Chicago is a co-working space and technology innovation hub established back in 2012. The hub recently added a new 41,000-square-foot expansion on the building’s 13th floor. According to ChicagoInno, 1871 is currently home to more than 500 startups and hosts 1,000 events and workshops each year.

1871 Welcomes Chris Anderson for Talk on His New Book
For anyone who has ever been inspired by a talk, or wants to be a better speaker...
ISC will host Chris Anderson, creator of TED Talks, discussing his new book, “TED TALKS: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking,” an insider’s guide to creating talks that are unforgettable. The event is a precursor to ISC’s Chicago Science Fest taking place on May 13-14, so it’s an excellent opportunity for those interested in science communication to learn from a master communicator.
Since taking over TED in the early 2000s, Chris Anderson has shown how carefully crafted short talks can be the key to unlocking empathy, stirring excitement, sharing knowledge and insights, and promoting a shared dream. Done right, a talk can electrify a room and transform an audience’s worldview. Done right, a talk is more powerful than anything in written form. Chris Anderson has worked behind the scenes with all the TED speakers who have inspired us the most, and in this book he shares insights from such favorites as Sir Ken Robinson, Amy Cuddy, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Salman Khan, Dan Gilbert, Mary Roach, Matt Ridley, and dozens more. It covers everything from how to craft your talk’s content to how you can be most effective on stage. This is the 21st century’s new manual for truly effective communication and it is a must-read for anyone who is ready to create impact with their ideas.
CHRIS ANDERSON is the curator of TED. Trained as a journalist after graduating from Oxford University, Anderson launched more than 100 successful magazines and websites before turning his attention to TED, which he and his nonprofit organization acquired in 2001. His TED mantra — “ideas worth spreading” — continues to blossom on an international scale. He lives in New York City.
