THE KITCHEN [COMMUNITY] OPENING 80 LEARNING GARDENS IN CHICAGO
The Kitchen Community is building 80 Learning Gardens in Chicago this year with Mayor Emanuel and CPS!
Background:
After Kimbal Musk and his brother Elon sold their first company (Zip2) in 1999, Kimbal entered culinary school to pursue his passion for creating community through food. In 2004 he opened Colorado’s first farm to table restaurant, The Kitchen.
Alarmed by the growing childhood obesity epidemic and armed with insights from family companies Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity, Kimbal and The Kitchen restaurant co-owners created a scalable school garden solution and housed it within a non-profit, The Kitchen Community.
With a mission of Connecting Kids to Real Food, The Kitchen Community creates Learning Gardens in schools and communities across America. Learning Gardens are hands-on learning environments and experiential play-spaces with vegetables. Learning Gardens are designed to be catalysts for community-wide behavioral improvements in childhood nutrition, socialization, and student achievement in under-served neighborhoods across the country.
The Kitchen Community, working closely with Mayor Emanuel, CPS, and private donors, created 16 Learning Gardens in Chicago schools last year. By the end of this year there will be 100 Learning Gardens in Chicago.
