Startups Head to White House

4/10/2014
Startups are quickly becoming the lifeblood of the connected-device space, as these companies provide a surge of innovation in the market. Now, one startup incubator is heading to Washington, D.C., to take part in a national summit on entrepreneurship.

Today, five of 1871's businesses are joining CEO Howard Tullman to visit the White House, as part of a conference on entrepreneurship. Together, the companies will have the opportunity to visit the White House and meet with other entrepreneurs and administration officials.

The entrepreneurs that have traveled across the country to attend the summit include: CancerIQ, www.cancer-iq.com, a Big Data platform for cancer; Q-It, www.q-it.com, which turns a child’s viewing into an educational experience; 640 Labs, www.640labs.com, a system to collect farming data; Rippleshot, www.rippleshot.com, technology to stop fraud; and Zero Percent,www.zeropercent.us, a safe way to donate surplus food.

Tullman says it is exciting to be at the White House with the opportunity to help the administration understand the challenges facing technology entrepreneurs in the Midwest and it is also a good opportunity to showcase the five companies on a national stage.

1871 is an entrepreneurial hub for digital startups and consumes 50,000-sq.ft. of Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. The organization was founded in May 2012 with backing from venture capitalist J.B. Pritzker and the state of Illinois. In March, 1871 announced 1871 FEMtech, which is a Chicago-based incubator that will cater to women-owned technology startups and will facilitate opportunities for female entrepreneurs.

With the latest trip to the White House, the organization continue to make its stamp on technology innovation, offering startups the opportunity to network with administration officials and help to spread the knowledge about some of the challenges that tech startups face today.
