(Crain's) — The Illinois Technology Assn. named this year’s brightest tech stars in Chicago with its City Lights Awards on Thursday night.
Howard Tullman, an entrepreneur and venture capitalist and head of Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, received the City Lights award.
Groupon Inc. won the lighthouse award for being, well, Groupon, and generating huge buzz for Chicago’s tech scene.
The Chicago Transit Authority won the award for best use of technology by a non-tech organization for its bus and train tracker technology.
Adam Caplan, CEO of cloud-computing company Model Metrics Inc. in Chicago, was named CEO of the year.
Mohammad Shahidehpour, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology, was named technologist of the year.
Tap Me Inc., a Chicago startup that does gaming advertising, was named newcomer of the year.
Itasca-based AirCell, which makes in-flight Internet systems used by United Airlines and others, received the rising star award.
MentorMob Inc., social-media education site, won the best new concept award.
