A REMINDER FROM STEVEN KAPLAN

When Trump was elected president, some said the office would change him. We saw how that went. He remained a brutal, corrupt monster. He did not learn about service and responsibility and the majesty of office. Power only heightened his awful qualities, allowed him to morph into a more grotesque species of demagogue, incapable of discharging his duties for the benefit of all. Over 200 thousand Americans have paid the ultimate price for this great mistake, and the nation is mired in fear, unemployment, dislocation, defeat.

Now, the same mistake is being reenacted with his Covid infection, the nonsense that his fear, his ordeal, will somehow humanize him and change him into a leader for all. What utter crap. He did nothing but lie, sidestep, grift, dissemble and avoid Covid when it was a virus approaching our shores, to the betrayal of America, and he has repeated the performance now that Covid has entered his body. We are being fed a pack of lies about when the virus was detected, when it likely entered his body, what symptoms he has displayed and when, what the contact tracing indicates, etc. etc. All with the same ineffectual bluster and overt calculation that accompanies each of his acts: to supposedly "save" his political ass when it merely reveals the limits of his intellect, his low cunning, his depravity of spirit, the desperate stabs at ruthlessness that accompany his utter selfishness.

We should not wish for his passing, I suppose, any more than we would welcome the death of a dog. But please don't feed me some crap about the disease ennobling him, elevating him into a moral creature. Please don't suggest that I am meant to feel empathy for a brutal, harmful man who never displayed empathy his entire life.
